This chapter discusses approaches to collecting application-profile characteristics using Cisco management tools. It discusses the classification of systems and the terms associated with this area of network management, going on to cover the ITUT FCAPS recommendations.

This chapter introduces the concept of an operational support system (OSS) for the enterprise, focusing on their interoperability and associated processes to provide the IT manager with the total view of the environment.

It goes on to discuss the definition and subsequent collection of metrics using protocols and applications such as SNMP, RMON, NBAR, and NetFlow.

Reporting the performance of the application is critical to the business model. The chapter discusses the hierarchical approach of collect once and use many for the various metrics.

Finally, it discusses the need to constantly review and refine the monitoring strategy to keep the process and systems in line with the business requirements and objectives.
